“We have some of the most experienced hair stylists in San Diego. I call them the gods of hairstyling. But what’s even more important is we really care about our clients. All of us help our clients –men and women - find natural-looking, contemporary hairstyles that compliment their looks without going to extremes. Our clientele must appreciate that because they keep coming back. Most of them for years. And we get tons of referrals. “
And a lot of those referrals are to fix mistakes. Mistakes made at other hair salons or by people who dye their own hair at home. Ms. Faulkner elaborates:
“We see people with damaged hair all the time, or with bad hair color, or just lousy haircuts, and we work hard to fix their problems. Some of these people come in and are just desperate, and they would pay anything if we could just fix their hair. And we do. But we don’t charge an arm and a leg. Our prices are really quite reasonable, considering the quality of the service.”

“Sometimes we have walk-ins who ask us for pink hair, or leopard spots on their hair, or whatever; things that aren’t really our specialty,” says Faulkner. “What we do is wonderful hair coloring and fantastic hair styles - including great bridal or wedding hair in San Diego, by the way – because what’s important to our clients is looking their best, and looking current, without going over the top. And that is exactly what we give them.”
Originally located in the historic district of Old Town San Diego there is a interesting story about the origins of Tamales Hair Salon’s rather unorthodox name:
"We found this cute location in Old Town, and in keeping with the atmosphere of the place I decided to name my new hair salon ‘Hot Tamales’. So I order this great big sign that says ‘Hot Tamales ’and proudly hang it up on the front of the salon. Before you know it, the city of San Diego comes along and tells me the sign’s too big. I have to take it down. Now I paid good money for that sign and I wasn’t about to order another one, so with the help of an electric saw, I cut the sign in half and the shop became ‘Tamales’. It didn’t do much justice to my original idea, but kept the city officials happy and the name stuck."
It seems hair isn’t the only this Ms Faulkner knows how to cut.
